• Hazardous materials (commercial and industrial) are prohibited from landfills with stiff fines and penalties for non-compliance. It is the generator's responsibility to determine if the waste is hazardous or not. A material is either listed hazardous waste (on a published list), or it is a material that exhibits 1 or more of the 4 hazardous waste characteristics (ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic). If you think you have hazardous waste, contact La Crosse County Hazardous Materials Facility at (608) 785-9999 for help.
• Most municipalities have instructions for handling brush. Hilltopper can haul loads of clean wood, including brush, logs, and even stumps. Please contact us for specific instructions.
• All yard waste is banned from recycling centers. Most municipalities handle yard waste differently--some have drop-off sites and some have curbside collection. Contact your local municipality for yard waste instructions.
• We can pick up appliances. Please contact our recycling center for pricing information. Some retail outlets dispose of your old appliance when you purchase a new one. You can also haul your old appliance to our facility in Onalaska.
• Liquids of any kind are prohibited in landfills. Empty paint cans or cans with dried paint inside can be placed with your recyclables. Old paint (liquid) and lead-based paint (liquid or dried), thinners, and hazardous materials should be taken to the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials facility. Call (608) 785-9999 for days and hours of operation.
• All light bulbs, including fluorescent lights, may be taken to the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials facility. There is a charge for disposal.
